Microsoft marks latest Windows printing issue as resolved (KB5005033)

Image
Microsoft acknowledged another printing related issue on Windows. After installing the August 2021 patches for Windows , e.g. KB5005033 or KB5005031, some users noticed that printing was causing issues on said devices. According to Microsoft’s description, affected printers used Point and Print in some environments. These would throw the error message “Do you trust this printer” on any print job started from the affected device. Users were prompted to enter administrative credentials every time an application attempted to print or a print client connected to the print server. Microsoft’s analysis of the issue concluded that the issue is caused by a filename conflict. ADVERTISEMENT This is caused by a print driver on the print client and the print server using the same filename, but the server has a newer version of the file. When the print client connects to the print server, it finds a newer driver file and is prompted to update the drivers on the print client, but the file in

Gmail Android app gets improved search filters

Image
A couple of weeks ago, Google introduced a new feature in the Gmail Android app, that allows users to call their Google Meet contacts directly from the email client. Today, the popular mail service has announced another useful option for the mobile app, improved search filters. Here’s how the Gmail Android app works currently. You tap on the search bar, and type the keyword and the app displays the relevant results. It also highlights the words that you searched for. It’s not bad per se, as it gets the job done. However, if you compare it with its web mail equivalent, yes it is too basic. ADVERTISEMENT That is precisely what Google is aiming to change, by bringing the search filters from the web UI to the mobile app. When you perform a search inside the app, you will see a set of new options below the search bar. The screenshot shows 4 options: Sender, recipient, date, and attachment. If the web mail interface is anything to go by, the search filters in the mobile app should also

Will unsupported Windows 11 devices be bricked by Microsoft?

Image
When Microsoft announced its Windows 11 operating system, it made it very clear that the operating system was designed for devices that meet the operating system’s system requirements. The company pulled the released Windows 11 compatibility checker, because it only returned “compatible” or “not compatible” when run, but did not provide explanations. With the release just a week away, users worldwide are left with uncertainty when it comes to installing Windows 11 on unsupported devices. Recently, Microsoft added a new prompt to the setup of Windows 11 that acts as a waiver if the device does not meet the minimum system requirements of Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system. ADVERTISEMENT One sentence sticks out in particular: If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won’t be entitled to receive updates. Does it mean that unsupported Windows 11 devices won’t receive updates, even security updates? Or is Microsoft playing it safe and m

YouTube’s experimental desktop video downloading feature is severely lacking

Image
Google is testing a new experimental feature on YouTube currently that gives YouTube premium subscribers options to download videos on the desktop for later viewing. It is unclear how wide-reaching the experiment is, but reports suggest that it is not limited to a single geographical region. All YouTube Premium subscribers need to do is sign-in to their account on YouTube, and visit the site’s New page , which lists experimental features that users may activate for a limited period. Once joined, YouTube premium subscribers will see a download button when a video is watched or when the three-dots menu is opened.  Downloaded videos may then be watched on http://youtube.com/feed/downloads. The experiment is set to end on October 19th, 2021. According to the description, downloads are limited to the browser’s Chrome, Edge and Opera. ADVERTISEMENT The implementation is temporary at this point, and it is not clear if Google will make it a permanent option on desktop versions of YouTube

Image
Google has been working on a new extension manifest, Manifest v3, for quite some time. The company introduced support for the new manifest version in Chrome 88 , released earlier in 2021, and has now revealed plans to phase out support for extensions that use Manifest v2. According to the timeline that Google posted, Chrome’s Web Store will block new Manifest V2 extensions from being accepted from January 17, 2022 onward. Updates for existing Manifest V2 extensions can still be submitted and these will be updated normally. Should you buy a Microsoft Surface Go 3 device?

Image
Microsoft unveiled new Surface devices this week, including a new Surface Go 3 device . All devices are available for preorder and come with the company’s Windows 11 operating system. Surface Go 3 LTE models will launch “in the coming months” according to Microsoft. The Surface Go 3 is the third Surface Go device. I bought the first model, the Surface Go, in 2019 and have used it as an ultra portable device for writing. It is lightweight and ideal for the task, but you should not expect performance wonders from the device. All Surface Go devices have been fairly underpowered up to this point, and while you could pick the fastest available model to get more RAM and processing power, you’d still end up with a low power device. ADVERTISEMENT All Surface Go 3 models come with Windows 11, Windows 11 Home in S mode to be precise. Microsoft has not confirmed it, but it is likely that Wind0ws 11 Home S can be converted to Windows 11 Home, just like it was possible to convert Windows 10 S

Microsoft says it will roll out the Android 11 Update for the 1st gen Surface Duo by the end of this year

Image
Microsoft announced its new Surface Duo 2 a couple of days ago. But let’s not forget the first gen foldable. It was launched in August 2020, and was priced starting at $1399 for the base variant with 128 GB of storage, while the 256 GB model was available for $1499. That is a pretty expensive device, wouldn’t you agree? When Microsoft unveiled the foldable, it promised that it would support the dual-screen device with 3 years of OS updates and security patches. It has been over a year after since the 1st-gen Surface Duo was released, and the premium foldable is still running on Android 10. You read that right. The device did get some security updates, but it wasn’t updated to the latest and greatest that Android had to offer. The lack of 5G, NFC, a small battery and the other technical flaws aside, the foldable was criticized for having rather buggy software which made it difficult to use. Microsoft tried to attract more buyers by slashing the price of the device by 50% a few months

Nvidia releases GeForce drivers for the final version of Windows 11

Image
Nvidia released updated Game Ready and Studio drivers for the final version of Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system today. The company did release its first Windows 11 ready drivers back in July, but the drivers released today are designed for the final version of Windows 11, which Microsoft plans to release on October 5, 2021. Nvidia customers who plan on upgrading their devices to Windows 11 the moment the new operating system is released, or purchasing a new gaming PC or laptop in the first week of general availability, can point their browsers to the official GeForce Game Ready driver download page or the Nvidia Studio driver download page to download the latest drivers to the system for installation. Windows 11 includes several new gaming related features. Three core features are DirectX 12 Ultimate, Auto HDR and DirectStorage. Auto HDR is designed to bring High Dynamic Range to games that don’t support it. It requires compatible hardware, a monitor with HDR support, and a

Microsoft’s Windows 11 compatibility app PC Health Check is available for everyone now

Image
Wonder whether a PC running Windows is compatible with Microsoft’s soon-to-be released operating system Windows 11? Microsoft changed the system requirements of Windows 11 significantly, and many devices that run Windows 10 or earlier versions of Windows fine won’t be compatible with Windows 11 as a consequence. The new version of Windows will be released on October 5, 202.1 Microsoft released its PC Health Check tool when it announced Windows 11 officially. The tool was available to Insiders only, and checked, if the PC it was run on was compatible with Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system. The company pulled the tool shortly thereafter, and promised that it would release an updated version of it before the release of Windows 11. The updated version was released for Insiders exclusively some time ago; this public version of the tool is now available. Interested users can download the official PC Health Check app from Microsoft’s Windows 11 website . You need to scroll down al

OnePlus will introduce a new OS by integrating OxygenOS with ColorOS

Image
A few months ago, OnePlus and Oppo announced that they were merging the codebase of their custom Android skins, OxygenOS and ColorOS respectively. This would reduce the burden on the developers, and streamline the process. Many OnePlus fans raised their eyebrows at the time. OnePlus’ co-founder Pete Lau downplayed the concerns, and re-assured users that this move was beneficial for both brands. He had also clarified and that the OnePlus phones sold globally will continue to run on OxygenOS, while the company’s devices sold in China would shift to ColorOS. The ColorOS 12 web page (in China) lists several OnePlus devices as eligible for the upcoming firmware. Well, it turns out the fans who were worried about the merger, weren’t paranoid after all. Lau took to the company’s forums today, to announce some developments. The post talks about the product strategy and pricing, and how the company is focusing on the camera experience on its devices. But more importantly, one of the things
