Microsoft’s Buy Now, Pay Later integration in Edge is highly controversial

Image
Microsoft announced a new addition to the company’s Microsoft Edge web browser in mid-November. Available only in Insider Builds of Edge at the time, the feature was rolled out in Edge 96 Stable recently. Microsoft decided to add support for a Buy Now, Pay Later service, provided by ZIP, into Edge. Services such as Zip or Afterpay offer so-called Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) services. Shoppers may use them to get items that they buy right away and pay for these items in installments over time. Microsoft partnered with Zip and Edge users may use the Zip service when they make purchases between $35 and $1000 in the browser, even if the shopping site does not support it. ADVERTISEMENT Edge’s integrated BNPL is limited to paying back the owed money in 4 installments over 6 weeks. Microsoft notes that the integration improves the application process. Applying BNPL could take time, you need to sign in with zip every single time. With BNPL in Edge, you can simply link your Microsoft acco

How to enable the Group Policy Editor on Windows 11 Home

Image
Microsoft ships a useful tool called the Group Policy Editor, commonly known as Gpedit.msc or just GPEDIT, with the Pro version of its Windows operating system. It is handy for enabling or disabling functions of various elements in the OS, by changing Registry values, but in a more user-friendly way. Unfortunately, Home Edition users don’t get access to this nifty tweaking utility. But, there is a way to enable the Group Policy Editor on Windows 11 Home. Let me remind you that simply enabling the utility only lets you access the GPEDIT console’s interface, it does not apply the changes for the policy settings (at least not for the ones I tried to modify). It is still worth a shot though, especially for the price of free, and the GUI definitely works. Note: If you have Windows 11 Pro, don’t bother with this, as you will already have the fully-functional version of the tool. How to enable the Group Policy Editor on Windows 11 Home 1. It may be time to upgrade your PC’s Memory

Image
In times where smartphones have often more memory installed than desktop PCs, tablets or laptops, it is a good idea to at least think about upgrading RAM. More RAM may improve the performance of the device, as it may speed up certain operations. One example: a work PC that I’m using VirtualBox on has only 8 Gigabytes of RAM. Whenever I run a Windows 11 VM using the software, everything slows down considerable as it takes away 4 Gigabytes of RAM from the system. Gamers and users who use memory-hungry applications may also benefit from more RAM. There is one caveat: not all devices can be upgraded. Depending on the device, RAM may already be at the limit of what is supported, or it may be soldered and not replaceable because of that. ADVERTISEMENT Why it is time to upgrade RAM RAM is relatively cheap right now. I bought a 16 Gigabyte G.SKill kit last week for less than $50. Installation was quick on the device I mentioned above, and the experience has improved significantly while

Waterfox G4.0.3.1 update released with fix for bootstrapped extensions, menu bar issues

Image
Waterfox has been updated to version G4.0.3.1. This release fixes some issues that users had reported in the previous build. Version G.4.0.2 of the web browser, which shipped at the beginning of this month, had a bug that prevented the installation of bootstrap add-ons. Waterfox would throw out an “addon is corrupt” error message, when users tried to install the legacy extensions. Waterfox G4.0.3.1 update resolves the issue. The latest version also patches a bug that was preventing previously installed bootstrap add-ons, from loading upon the next restart, they were getting disabled by the application. You may have come across an issue in Waterfox G 4.0.2, that caused the menu bar to be displayed partially off the screen, in maximized mode. It also resulted in tabs listed on the menu bar. Both of these issues have been fixed in Waterfox G4.0.3.1. Users who wish to use bootstrap extensions, can find forked versions of some popular add-ons at this page . The update introduces a patch

Windows 11 Debloater is a powerful but confusing tweaker

Windows 11 Debloater is a free portable tweaker for Microsoft’s Windows 11 operating system. It is a general purpose tweaker, unlike specialized tools that focus solely on privacy and security . The startpage, EZ Debloater, displays quick actions that users can perform with just a few clicks. These range from uninstalling OneDrive to applying essential tweaks and enabling the Clipboard History feature. Tweaks are displayed as scripts when selected on the same screen, but most users will have a

Distrowatch Top 5 Distributions Review: Pop!_OS

Image
Pop!_OS is rated as number five o n the popular rankings site, Distrowatch , based on number of hits to the Distrowatch page for the OS, not based on actual downloads / user-base. You can check out my reviews of the other four top spots by following these links: Linux Mint , Manjaro , EndeavourOS , and MX Linux . There aren’t many Linux distributions that I haven’t tried…But Pop!_OS is one of them, and so doing this review is literally my first time ever touching the OS…And I both liked it, and had serious issues with it. For those unfamiliar with Pop!_OS, it’s an Ubuntu based distribution created by System76, a popular manufacturer of Linux-centric prebuilt computers. The distribution is widely regarded as stable, modern, filled with features, and beginner friendly, as well as fairly minimalist in regards to bloat. ADVERTISEMENT Pop!_OS only comes in a single flavour, GNOME, and the OS is built specifically with that in mind as a result. My Specs: Ryzen 5 3500X NVIDIA GTX 16

Mozilla bans the FVD Speed Dial extension and removes it from Firefox; but users are furious after losing their bookmarks

Image
Mozilla has banned the popular new tab extension, FVD Speed Dial, from its Firefox add-ons repository. A discussion on Mozilla’s Discourse portal sheds some light behind the drama. The full name of the add-on is Speed Dial [FVD] New Tab Page, 3D Start Page, Sync. The developer was Nimbus Web. About a year ago, Mozilla discovered that the add-on was using a shady way to collect user data. FVD would intercept search queries made by users, and redirect these web requests to a third-party search engine. ADVERTISEMENT Having being caught red-handed, the extension’s developer was told by Mozilla, to cease the practice. The developer disabled the feature, and FVD Speed Dial was allowed to be hosted on the AMO. Fast-forward to the present, and it appears someone didn’t learn their lesson. The controversial feature was re-added in FVD Speed Dial. Since the developer had been warned earlier, this was a repeated offense, Mozilla decided that that was the last straw, and blocked the add-on.
